    Decoration:

    Folio 4v: outline decorative initial

    Folio 11v: full-page frontispiece to Matthew, in brown and black outline only. The frame contains a small lion. The Evangelist, beardless, sits facing right, and holding a scroll: desk, with sloping top, on ornamental shaft, on right. In the upper right corner an angel in air (horizontal), holding a scroll

    Folio 12v: full-page initial L and frame in red and black outline. The words '(L)iber generationis I. C. filii David filii Abraham' were meant to be inserted.

    Folio 59v: Outline. Mark, beardless, sits writing on a scroll on desk on right. Winged lion, proceeding from a cloud above on right, holds a book. The text begins: 'Ecce mitto angelum' (the first words not being inserted), and has two good outline initials.

    Folio 86v: There may have been an outline picture to Luke here but if so, it has been written upon.

    Folio 87r: Decorative initial.

    Folio 129r: Outline figure of John facing right and holding scroll, of which the end lies on a desk on right. The eagle faintly seen above on right, the frame also faintly indicated.


    Acquisition:

    Purchased by Enriqueta Rylands in 1901 from James Ludovic Lindsay (b. 1847, d. 1913), 26th Earl of Crawford. Bequeathed by Rylands to the John Rylands Library in 1908.

    Gospel Book from Lower Saxony, made in the eleventh century. The only manuscript to have survived from the early medieval library at Walbeck near Magdeburg.

    bought by James Ludovic Lindsay (b. 1847, d. 1913), 26th Earl of Crawford in the Bateman Sale of May 1893 for £93 (CLL, May-Aug. 1893, no. 417; CLI, 1892-94, no. 153); he had been prepared to offer £120.
