Summary:
Manuscript 503 is, similar to ms. 192, a codex with a distinct
English outlook. It contains five commentaries; a quodlibet, two
commentaries on Aristotelian works, and two on the Sentences. The
first text, the (ff. 1r-20v) De quolibet Rodinton is attributed to
the Franciscan philosopher and Oxford theologian Johannes de
Rodington (1290-1348), although this attribution has been doubted
by more recent scholarship. The next three texts, (ff. 20v-50v)
Questiones supra librum de generatione, (ff. 51r-79v) Questiones
morales edite a magistro Clariton de Anglia, and (ff. 79v-105r)
Quaestiones super libros Sententiarum, have been written by Richard
Kilvington (c. 1302-1361), another Oxford scholar and doctor in
Theology. The first two sets of questions concern the De
Generatione and the Ethica of Aristotle, fitting the arts
curriculum. The questions on the Sentences reflect the influence
both William Ockham and John Scotus had on Kilvington. The final
text, (ff. 106r-115v) Quaestiones seu determinationes super librum
Sententiarum, have been written by an anonymous scribe who is
called Monachus Niger. Scholars agree that he was probably a
Benedictine and that he lectured at Oxford in the late 1330s. The
codex was written as a single unit, in two columns per page and in
a textualis script. Space has been preserved for decorating, in
particular for initials, but these have not been added. The margins
are empty, and there are no signs of usage. The codex is bound in a
post-medieval leather binding. The fenestra has survived and is
attached to the first fly leaf. The codex was originally owned by
the Ter Doest abbey, and found its way into the collection of Ten
Duinen. The cross-shaped stamp of the latter abbey is found on the
first and final leaves. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer] Title:
