April 1781, in Newport, Rhode Island. The letter is composed of a
single folded sheet, with manuscript text on the first page. The
fourth page bears an address to "Monsieur le chevalier Destouches,
commandant ... du roy ; "en Vada" and a red wax seal. Pages 2-3 are
