Leather (brown, blind-tooled) over wooden boards with bevelled
edges. Two clasp fastenings (closing back to front, renewed, hooks
and straps missing). - Spine renewed.
Date: Based on Byvanck database, so probably on the style of the
decoration. - Others plead for an earlier date, ca. 1440 (Lieftinck
1948, De Bruin 1954).
Origin: Based on the decoration (see Byvanck database) and
supported by the dialect.
According to the catalogue of Tydeman and Bodel Nijenhuis (1829)
the binding in earlier times also contained the incunable: Quator
novissima (Dutch) = Die vier uterste / Gerard de Vliederhoven
(Gouda 1479). Later removed and kept with the printed books (1497 E
7).
Textual: (f. 4va) Incipit: "Die mig volghet die en wandert niet in
duusternisse...". Excplicit (f. 26rb) "...Hier eyndet dat eerste
boec van quisequitur Dat ander beghint". - (ff. 118v-124r) Dutch
translation of a treatise possibly by Thomas a Kempis. In the
manuscript referred to as Book V of 'Qui sequitur' (the incipit of
Thomas a Kempis' De imitatione Christi). Written in the tradition
and style of the Modern Devotion. - (ff. 126r-137r) Dutch
translation of Thomas a Kempis' Libellus spiritualis exercitii. -
(ff. 137r-143v) Dutch translation of Thomas a Kempis' Libellus de
recognitione propriae fragilitatis. - (ff. 143v-164r) Dutch
translation of Thomas a Kempis' Hortulus rosarum.
