A volume of four musical works by John Dowland set in two, four, or
five parts with lute tablature.
Contents: The first booke of songes or ayres of foure partes with
tableture for the lute [London, 1600]. The second booke of songs or
ayres, of 2. 4. and 5. parts [London, 1600]. The third and last
booke of songs or aires [London, 1603]. Lachrimæ, or Seaven teares
figured in seaven passionate pavans [London, 1604].

Binding: Early 17th century English calf over pasteboards with 4
alum-tawed skin bands; upper and lower covers decorated with a
gilt-stamped centrepiece with the initials "CS" (Charles Somerset)
set within two concentric rectangles formed of a single gilt
fillet, the inner with gilt-stamped corner fleurons; border of
blind fillets; remains of green ribbon ties; flat spine divided
into compartments with double gilt fillets; gilt-stamped floral
ornament within each compartment; printed waste (16th century
edition of Gregorius, Moralia, sive Expositio in Job) used as
endleaves.
