2 pts [in 1], 21 cm (4to) Leaf height: 209 mm, width: 155 mm.
Binding:
16th century(?) parchment covers with added nineteenth-century[?] floral decorated endpapers; direct-lettered MS on spine: Castelvetro, / Il Petrarca. / 1582.
Acquisition:
Donated to the The University of Manchester by Hélène Louise Bullock, widow of Walter L. Bullock, Serena Professor of Italian, in 1944; accession no. 342689.
Data Source(s):
Created as part of the project 'Petrarch Commentary and Exegesis in Renaissance Italy, c.1350-c.1650' funded by the AHRC and led by Professor Simon Gilson (University of Oxford, Principal Investigator), Dr Federica Pich (University of Leeds, Co-Investigator) and Dr Guyda Armstrong (University of Manchester, Co-Investigator), edited and revised by Julianne Simpson
Subject(s):
Noves, Laura de, 1308?-1348.; Italian poetry -- 14th century -- Early works to 1800.
Abstract:
Format:
Codex
Provenance:
Seventeenth-century ownership inscription on the titlepage: Gregorio Caroprese [probably the Italian philosopher Gregorio Caloprese (1650-1715)].
From the library of Walter Llewellyn Bullock (1890-1944); University of Manchester Library bookplate on front pastedown: Walter Ll. Bullock Collection
Condition:
Imperfect: wanting p. 155-158 (sigs. V2-V3), and p. 287-288 (sig. Nn4) of pt. I.
Additions:
Italian MS note on page 257: alludendo al nome dell'amata.
Note(s):
The first part consists of 'parte prima del Petrarca'; the second, with separate pagination & register, contains 'parte seconda' and 'parte terza'.
Printed by Piero Perna (see L. Perini, La vita e i tempi di Pietro Perna, p. 499, n. 375 and BM STC - Italian, p. 505). Pietro de Sedabonis is probably Perna's pseudonym.
Edited by Giacomo Castelvetro, nephew of the commentator, as stated in the dedicatry letter to Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara.
With Castelvetro's device on the titlepage.
Petrarch's poems in italic type and commentary in roman type; printed numbering; Petrarch's poems printed with one verse per line, with commentary distributed across the page beneath each poem.
The Babylonian sonnets (the three sonnets criticizing ecclesiastical corruption in the papal Curia in Avignone) are omitted.
Castelvetro's commentary has been only twice published, the second time by Zatta, Venice, 1756. It was censured by Catholics as giving a heretical construction to certain verses of the text, but is nevertheless counted superior to any which had yet appeared, surpassing Gesualdo's. The text is copied from the Aldine of 1514, but with many errors, according to Gamba.
