Extent:
[123] leaves. Note:
Rotunda antiquior script; up to 26 long lines per page (20 x 11.5
cm.).
Written by a single hand (?) in Latin, though with some
inconsistencies in formation of letters, particularly 'd'; in brown
ink with red rubrics; ruling in light ink; numerous capitals in red
or touched in red; with some contemporary interlinear corrections
and marginal annotations.
With some catchwords and prickings still visible; page numbering
added in a much later hand.
Nineteenth-century black straight-grained goat skin binding, with a
smooth spine decorated with alternating fleurons and floral
friezes; gilt frame of floral and palmette motifs on boards.
Enlarged warble hole on leaf [94] with accommodating text.
Homeliary containing a Carolingian collection of sermons,
erroneously attributed to the Venerable Bede. Influenced by the
school of Auxerre, the text represents an important step in the
evolution of the sermon as a literary form and is considered to be
a contribution of the Carolingian Renaissance.
With the bookstamp of Sir T[homas]. P[hillipps]. Middle Hill, 902
on front end leaf, and with the ex libris leather armorial crest
bookplate of James P.R. Lyell on front pastedown.
