    Binding:

    16th century[?] parchment over boards; sewing supports visible at front and rear hinges; raised bands on spine; direct-lettered MS across head of spine: Petrarcha; direct-lettered MS across foot of spine: 1553; MS remnants of flower drawings in second and third compartments on spine.

    Donated to the The University of Manchester by Hélène Louise Bullock, widow of Walter L. Bullock, Serena Professor of Italian, in 1944.


    Collation:
    In signature bb of the preliminary matter, leaves bb 7 and bb 8 have been wrongly bound in place of bb 1 and bb 2, which follow bb 6.

    Imperfect: wanting leaves 174-177 (sigs. Z2-Z5).
    Additions:
    Italian MS note on the verso of the first free endpaper and MS sonnet made of four lines in honour of Petrarch's death on the verso of the titlepage; Eighteenth-century [1774?] cancelled MS note on the verso of the titlepage.

    Colophon reads: In Venetia per Domenico Giglio M D LIII.

    With the woodcut titlepage, containing portraits of Petrarch and Laura, and woodcuts of the Nicolini-Daniello edition of 1549, Giglio issued this edition to rival Giolito's with commentary by Gesualdo of the same year.

    Each triumph is preceded by a rectangular-box woodcut: Amoris (a3r), Pudicitie (d5r), Mortis (e4r), Fame (f5v), Temporis (h7r), Eternitatis (i3v)

    The second part, comprising the 'Trionfi', has separate titlepage on leaf a1r, with the same border and is without foliation.

    Printer's device on the titlepage and at end.

    Signatures: aa-bb⁸, cc⁶, A⁴, B-VV⁸, XX⁶; a-i⁸.

    A letter from the printer to Bernardo Priuli, a Life of Petrarch and a Life of Laura preceed the Gesualdo introduction.

    Petrarch's poems and commentary in italic type; Petrarch's texts set on left in small block, with commentary distributed on the rest of the page.
