Description
  • Composite volume formed of three parts probably brought together in the 17th century. Parts II and III are fragments of originally separate books.
    Provenance: Part I: acquired in Oxford by John Sheppey; Purchased from Sheppey's executors by William Reed; given to Merton in 1374 by Reed.
    Contents: f. i: fragment cut from margin of a book of church music, 14th c, originally a pastedown. Part I: (ff. 1-193), 14th c: Texts useful for preaching, and sermons. Including works by John of Wales, Communiloquium (ff. 1-16); Odo of Cheriton, Fabulae abridged (ff. 25v-29v); John Sheppey ?, Fabulae (ff. 30-42); 11 other items including 2 groups of sermons (at least 171). Part II: (ff. 194-209), end of 12th c: including Jean Beleth, Summa de ecclesiasticis officiis (ff. 194-201v); Peter of Blois, Compendium super Iob (ff. 206v-203 [sic] quire bound upside down). Part III: (ff. 210-227), 12th c: Anon. text on civil law (ff. 210-225v); Bernard of Clairvaux, Serm. 1 in Adventu (f. 225v). Pen trials (ff. 226-227v), f. 227 originally a pastedown.
