Entstanden ist das Ortenburger Wappenbuch wahrscheinlich zwischen
1466 und 1473 in Bayern, es wurde von verschiedenen Händen
geschrieben und illuminiert. Enthalten sind mehr als 500 meist
kolorierte Federzeichnungen von Wappen der Fürsten, Adeligen und
hohen geistlichen Würdenträger im Deutschen Reich sowie
Bannerträger mit Quaternionen (Vierergruppen gleichen Ranges).
Bemerkenswert ist die Vollständigkeit der Wappen der bayerischen
Bistümer und die Dominanz des Pfalz-Wittelsbacher Wappens. Trotz
der etwas groben Ausführung und teilweise entstellter Wappen ist
die Handschrift eine wertvolle Quelle für die Heraldik
Süddeutschlands gegen Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts. Um 1530 gelangte
die Handschrift in den Besitz der Grafen von Ortenburg bei Passau,
die genealogische Notizen über das Haus Ortenburg und Federskizzen
von Familienwappen hinzufügten. Das Wappenbuch verblieb im
Familienbesitz, bis es 1953 an die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Englische Version: This armorial was probably written and
illuminated by different hands in Bavaria between 1466 and 1473. It
contains heraldic devices of the Quaternions (Groups of Four, each
representing different social groups of the Holy Roman Empire). It
also illustrates the crests of (mostly) Bavarian princes, noblemen,
territories, bishoprics, and prince-bishops. Despite its somewhat
crude execution, it is a valuable resource for the heraldry of
Southern Germany towards the end of the 15th century. By 1534 the
manuscript had come into the possession of the counts of Ortenburg,
near Passau; there, heraldic devices of the Ortenburg family and
their ancestors were added. It remained with the family until 1953,
when it was sold to the Bavarian State Library, where it is
