- Description
-
- Whole-page. 6-line gold initial E(X incendio) and 3-line S(entio),
both with the usual decoration of white-vine stem interlace and the
larger capital incorporated into a brief border in the left margin.
Arabesque of the same in the lower margin about laurel wreath
banded with gold, in-filled with gold, against which is set a
shield bearing three sheaves (Kempe arms, later addition). Ciliate
gold studs.
Humanistic script, possibly not written by an Italian. Copied in Rome, c. 1448. Probably made for Richard Bole, who was in Rome c. 1447-1448 and was later associated with the Kemp family. Arms of Kempe added later. The manuscript may be one of those given to the University Library by Thomas Kempe, bishop of London, in 1488/9.
