  • Start of Book IV. Historiated initial with head of man with laurel wreath (emperor Julius Caesar Octavian?). Full panel border with floral motifs, vases, medallions with heads in profile (inspired by Ancient cameos). In lower border: in laurel wreath, coat of arms of the Rangoni family of Verona and Bentivoglio of Bologna. Headpiece miniature: Triumph of Julius Caesar Octavian after his conquest of Egypt. Procession with emperor holding sword, seated on horse-drawn cart. Nude man and woman (prisoners?) walk before the cart. Soldiers on horseback follow. Hilly landscape.
    Niccolo Rangoni married Bianca daughter of Giovanni di Bentivoglio in 1481. Baltimore, Walters Art Gallery W. 469 with same arms.
