English binding. English stamping (original boards replaced): the
centre of each side is a vertical row of square stamps bearing a
swan or goose with floriated tail. Round this are 21 similar stamps
of a griffin with floriated beak and tail, and outside this a
border of triangular ornaments, straight lines separate all these
rows, the back has only lines, with groups of three pellets.
Size: 200 x 130mm. On a manuscript of sermons written in 1460 and
placed in the University chest as a pledge in 1468. Note that
English bindings had clasps from the upper to the lower boards.
Continental books were generally clasped the other way.
