Die Handschrift mit dem Titel 'Les douze dames de rhétorique' (Die
zwölf Damen der Rhetorik) ist ein literarischer Disput über
Inspiration und Vorbilder schriftstellerischen Schaffens, der in
den 1460er Jahren an den Höfen von Burgund und Bourbon geführt
wurde. Beteiligte Autoren waren Jean Robertet (um 1420-1502/03),
Sekretär des bourbonischen Herzogs Johann II. und auf
burgundischer Seite George Chastelain (1414-1475), Dichter und
offizieller Historiograph am Hof Philipps des Guten - sowie als
Vermittler - Jean Seigneur de Montferrant, Erzieher und Kammerherr
am burgundischen Hof. In 17 Briefe von Robertet und Chastelain, die
um 1462-63 geschrieben wurden, ist ein allegorischer Traktat
eingebettet: in diesem erscheinen vor dem Seigneur de Montferrant
die zwölf Begleiterinnen der Rhetorik, anschließend werden sie
jeweils in einem dreistrophigen Gedicht vorgestellt. Die
ausführlichste Fassung der 'zwölf Damen' ist in lediglich drei
illuminierten Abschriften überliefert. Das Exemplar der
Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek wurde in Flandern (wohl in Brügge)
mit 15 etwa halbseitigen Miniaturen ausgestattet und ist 1528 im
Besitz von Philipp von Kleve nachweisbar. Vor 1777 erwarb Kurfürst
Karl Theodor von der Pfalz-Sulzbach die Handschrift und ließ sie
neu einbinden. 1803-1804 wurde ein Großteil der kurpfälzischen
Hofbibliothek von Mannheim nach München in die königliche
Hofbibliothek, Vorläufer der heutigen Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek

Englische Version: The manuscript entitled Les douze dames de
rhétorique (The twelve ladies of rhetoric) contains the literary
correspondence between Jean Robertet, secretary of the Bourbon duke
Jean II; George Chastelain, historiographer of Philippe le Bon of
Burgundy; and Jean de Montferrant, adviser and chamberlain at the
Burgundian court. Written around 1464-65, the 19 letters in French
and Latin are concerned with poetry. The letters are accompanied by
a series of descriptions in verse of the twelve companions of Lady
Rhetoric. Only five copies of the text, crafted immediately after
the composition of the original, have been preserved, three of
which were supplied with illuminations in Bruges. This manuscript,
decorated with 15 half-page miniatures, was in the possession of
Philip of Cleves, who probably had received it as a gift from his
father. Some time before 1777, Prince-Elector Karl Theodor of the
Palatinate-Sulzbach acquired the manuscript and provided it with a
new binding. In 1803-4, a part of the library of the electors of
the Palatinate, the Bibliotheca Palatina in Mannheim, including
this precious manuscript, was transferred to Munich. The manuscript
is now preserved in the Bavarian State Library. Publication Statement:
