    Data Source(s):
    Description based on Alexander Samely's unpublished draft catalogue, revised and expanded by Stefania Silvestri and Renate Smithuis.
    Subject(s):
    Bible. Old Testament--Versions, Jewish; Karaite manuscripts
    Abstract:

    Karaite Crimean Tatar translation in Hebrew characters of the Pentateuch (folios 1a-244b; some leaves missing and incomplete at the end) followed by a fragment from a Crimean Tatar translation in Hebrew characters of the end of Lamentations (folios 245a-b). With Hebrew lemmata, usually in the form of the first word of each verse. The Hebrew original of Genesis 1:1, Exodus 1:1 and the last verses of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers are given in full. Moritz Steinschneider describes a set of four manuscripts covering the entire Hebrew Bible in Crimean Tatar translation. His description of the first part, including the incipit, seems to correspond to exactly this manuscript. He also provides details of two colophons, present in the second and third part: the scribe is Baruch ben Moses, and the sections were concluded on 12 Tammuz 5574 (=30-06-1814) and 1 Adar 5574 (=21-02-1814).

    Foliation:

    Modern ink foliation in Arabic numerals 1-245 at the top outer corner of side a of each folio. Folio between 161 and 162 is unnumbered; the same happens between 173 and 174. The folio between 181 and 182 is numbered "181a", the one between 204 and 205 is "204a", between 214 and 215 is "214a" and between 224 and 225 is "224a". Paper stub between folios 212 and 213.

    Format:
    Codex

    Off-white and blue paper with visible vertical laid lines and single chain lines 25.8 mm apart, and several watermarks which include letters such as N, M, B, R, C. Blue paper used especially from folio 198 onwards and for bifolio 27-34.

    Handwritten label on spine, reading in Hebrew "170 /תרגום תורקי (קראי) / על / התורה ".

    Folio iva: Ownership note in Hebrew, including the name of the former owners Isaac son of Mordechai Shishtin? and Samuel Shishtin?.
    Folio 1a: Handwritten note in ink reading "170 / M. Gaster".
    Folio 245b: Handwritten by Moses Gaster, at the top outer corner in blue ink 18 ix 94, probably the date of acquisition of the manuscript, and at the bottom of the page "245 fol. / M.G.".
    First and last back fly-leaves: Handwritten notes in Hebrew.
    Back paste-down: Handwritten in purple crayon numeral 157.
