Summary: CCCC MS 56 is a sixteenth-century copy, made for Parker c. 1567, of Matthew Paris' Historia Anglorum (1067-1253) and the third part of the Chronica maiora (1254-9) with a continuation to 1273-4 which is attributed to William Rishanger. It is a direct copy of the same text in Matthew's autograph copy, London, BL MS Royal 14. C. VII, a crude attempt even being made to reproduce the heraldic shields found in the margins of this exemplar. The text of this manuscript for the years 1253-74 was used as the basis for Parker's printed volume of the Historia maiora published in 1570-71.

Note: (1r) In the initial letter D the arms of Parker are introduced, and in order to make each of the first eight lines begin with an e several words have been altered
Note: The shields, etc., which occur in the original MS. are neatly copied in colour on the margins of the present volume
Note: (2r) Between the prologue and the transcript of the Historia is a copy of the genealogical tract contained in MS 26 (Considerans prolixitatem), coming down to the reign of Henry III. Another copy, continued to Henry V, is in MS 100
Note: (198r) At the beginning of the reign of Henry III, Parker's arms are again inserted, with the date 1567
