Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 406 is a biography on the life of Pope Gregory I (c. 540-604), written as a conversation between master and student. It is written in late Carolingian style. The origin of the manuscript is unclear, the author and the place of origin are unknown. It was made around 1160-1180 and was owned by of Ter Doest Abbey. Part of the illumination of the text is the indication of the words of the master, signified with an ornamental letter M(agister), and the words of the student, indicated with an ornamental D(iscipulus). The manuscript also contains two black and red pen drawings. The first is a drawing of the master and the student, who are having the conversation about Pope Gregory I (Folio 2v). They are both holding scrolls with the first words they speak in the manuscript printed on it. The second is a drawing of Christ in Glory (Folio 63r). Christ is depicted as a teacher, with a kneeling monk at his feet. [Summary by Sarah Vanroye]
