Description
  • This manuscript consists of the Homiliae in Ezecheliem (Homilies on Ezekiel) , in two books , written by Pope Gregory I (b. c 540, d. 604), followed by an excerpt from the Creed of the 11th Council of Toledo (675) (ff. 168v-169v). It has been copied in the last quarter of the 11th century. The parchment has been severely damaged in some parts and restored afterwards. A 15th-century hand has supplied numerous losses, especially at the beginning of the manuscript (f. 1r). Contents: ff. 3r-168r: Pope Gregory I, Homiliae in Ezecheliem. Book 1 (ff. 3r-85v), preceded by a prologue (ff. 3r-v), begins: 'Dilectissimo fratri Mariniano episcopo'. The first homily, imperfect at the beginning due to missing leaves, begins (f. 4r): 'vidisset misit ad magos et ariolos'. Book 2 (ff. 86r-168r), preceded by a prologue (f. 86r), begins: 'Quoniam multis curis prementibus'; beginning of the first homily (f. 86r): 'In vicesimo et quinto anno transmigrationis nostre'. ff. 168v-169v: An excerpt of the Creed of the 11th Council of Toledo, beginning: 'Confitemur et credimus sanctam atque ineffabilem Trinitatem'. Decoration:Large initials, most with penwork decoration, usually red with green highlights or green with red highlights, some zoomorphic, e.g., two dragons biting each other (ff. 39v, 149v). Small simple initials in red or green, some with penwork decoration in the other colour.
