A revised version of Isaac Taylor's 1750 plan of Oxford, updated
after the major redevelopment of the 1770s. Streets & principal
buildings named, key to colleges, etc. Includes views of Christ
Church, Peckwater Square, Magdalen New Building and the
Observatory. Scale: 1:2,376.
Dedication: To the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor & Heads of Colleges,
And the High Steward, Mayor Aldermen &c Of the University &
City of Oxford; This Plan of the City of Oxford is humbly inscribed
by their obedient servant Wm Faden, Geographer to the King.
Remarks: Oxford Contains 20 Streets, 70 publick Courts, Lanes, and
Alleys, besides many noble publick Buildings. It has 1814 Houses, &
8292 Inhabitants, exclusive of the University; likewise 13
Parish-Churches and a Cathedral, and with the University, stands
upon 300 Acres of Land, & is 3½ Miles in Circumference. The
University contains 20 Colleges and 5 Halls. This Plan was first
published by Isaac Taylor in 1750, but the Copper Plates having
been lately purchased by the present Proprietor the whole has been
re-surveyed & all the new Improvements Alterations &c are
carefully inserted. Likewise the Views of Christ-Church, Peckwater
& the Observatory are entirely new. Published by Wm. FadenCharing
