Title
  • Miracula S. Thomae Herefordensis
Description
  • Miracles of St Thomas de Cantilupe, canonized in 1320, from the dossier prepared for consideration by the pope and cardinals, presented in an annual sequence.
Provenance: The book's medieval history is unknown, but a fragment of a document (a raised pastedown on fol. 1r) concerns the diocese of Hereford and suggests it came from there and perhaps from someone in the episcopal familia or one of the cathedral clergy. On fol. 1v is a pen trial, 'William Mullowe', c.1600. On fol. 1v 'Vide Catal: MSS. Glynne 87' refers to the catalogue of the library of Sir William Glynne, with the majority of whose manuscripts the book came to Exeter by bequest of Joseph San(d)ford.
Contents: Fragment of a document (f. i r-v). Miracles taking place between 1287 and 1305 (ff. 1r-41r). Miracles up to 1309 (ff. 41r-44r). Pen trial (f. 44v). Miracles taking place between 1310 and 1312 (ff. 45r-47v). Relatio processus (ff. 48v-59v). Miracle of the freeing of John Morevyle (f. 60r).
Hand: Written in a large number of gothic bookhands, some with documentary features such as the splitting of heads of ascenders. Punctuated by low point.
