Summary:
While most famous for his magnum opus Etymologiae, Isidorus of
Sevilla wrote several works on theology. His Quaestiones in Vetus
Testamentum or Allegoriae are commentaries on the books of the Old
Testament. In this manuscript we find the commentaries on (ff.
1r-92r) the Pentateuch; (ff. 92r-98r) Joshua; (ff. 98r-106r)
Judges; (ff. 106r-127v) Kings; and (ff. 127v-128v) Esdras. It was
written in the last quarter of the twelfth century (not the
fourteenth century, as suggested by De Poorter), possibly in
England. The text is written in a single column per page (with the
exception of the indices) without much decoration. Initials have
been added in red, blue and green ink, while the chapter numbers
and initials in the indices are different shades of red ink. The
manuscript contains two ownership inscriptions of Ter Doest, of
which one has been extended to include a book curse, as well as the
cross-shaped stamp of Ten Duinen. The fly leaves contain the
annotated text from a commentary on Aristotle's Ethics. The cover
is medieval and consists of cowskin over wooden boards, with
remains of clasps. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer] Title:
