Rose panels. English, early 16th century. Brown calfskin, decorated
with blind-stamped panels featuring a rose. The execution may
appear crude, but the style of combining a centre tool (in this
case a panel stamp) with corner tools in a frame formed by the use
of a roll tool is ultimately inspired by the Islamic pattern
established in the 15th century.
