The Orient in Venice. Italian (Venice), 1577. Lacquered brown
goatskin over pasteboards, with sunken central centrepiece and side
compartments in Oriental style. In centre of front board, the
winged lion of St Mark; on back board, the arms of Lorenzo Caveo.
The Republic of Venice had access through its trading privileges to
the bookbinders of the Near and Middle East, and were able to copy
Persian and Turkish exemplars for official documents, such as this
'Commissioni dogali', by which the Doge of Venice confirmed
official appointments.
