Regimental orderly book of Francis Marion's command. Included are
regimental orders by William Moultrie, Isaac Motte, and Francis
Marion, as well as general, department, and brigade orders,
proceedings of the court martial, etc. Biographical Note:
Having started his service in 2nd South Carolina Regiment as
captain and then promoted to Major (February 1776), and Lieutenant
Colonel (November 1776), Francis Marion took over the command of
the Regiment on Sept. 23, 1778 The 2nd South Carolina was organized
in summer 1775 at Charleston to consist of ten companies from
eastern South Carolina. On Nov. 4, 1775, it was adopted into the
Continental Army and assigned to Southern Department. Before Marion
assumed the command, it was under command of William Moultrie (June
1775 - Sept. 1776), and Isaac Motte (Sept. 1776- Sept. 1778). The
regiment took part in the defense of Charleston (1775-1776) and the
siege of Savannah (1778). In February 1780, it was consolidated
with the 6th South Carolina Regiment. Subjects:
