This manuscript consists of the Expositio in Regulam Sancti
Benedicti, a commentary on the Rule of St Benedict composed by
Smaragdus (b. c. 760, d. c. 830), abbot of the Benedictine abbey of
Saint-Mihiel in Lotharingia, soon after the Synod of Aachen
(816-817) and St Benedict of Aniane's Concordia regularum, together
with a miniature of St Dunstan foliated as f. 2, now kept
separately as Royal MS 10 A XIII/1. Contents:f. 2: A miniature of
St Dunstan, kept separately. ff. 3r-25v: Smaragdus of Saint-Mihiel,
Expositio super Prologum Regule Sancti Benedicti (Commentary on the
Prologue of the Rule of St Benedict), beginning (f. 3r): 'Incipit
prologus in expositionem regule beati Benedicti. Cum turbas
populorum (sic) cernerem monachorum in beati regula Benedicti
[...]. Incipit Expositio super prologum regule Beati Benedicti
patris monachorum. Obsculta hec nos ortantis beati verba sunt'. ff.
26r-156v: Smaragdus of Saint-Mihiel, Expositio in Regulam Sancti
Benedicti, preceded by capitula (ff. 26r-27r), beginning (f. 27r):
'Regula appellatur ab hoc quod obedientium dirigat mores'.
Decoration: Two foliate initials in colours, at the beginning of
the preface and the text (f. 3r). Initials in red, blue or green.
