- Trionfi (comm. Bernardo da Siena) e Canzoniere (comm. Franciscus
Philelphus and Hieronymus Squarzaficus) [Italian] (Venice:
Bernardinus Rizus, Novariensis, 1488)
Petrarch’s Triumphs (c. 1340-74), a series of vision poems after the manner of Dante’s Comedy, was extremely popular in the late fifteenth century. This illustration portrays the opening of The Triumph of Love: Cupid rides on a fiery chariot drawn by white horses, leading in captivity famous historical and mythological personages who have fallen victim to love. The coat of arms bottom right beneath the woodcut is that of the powerful Bolognese Bentivoglio family, and that beneath the commentary belongs to the Albergati. The copy may be connected with a wedding between the two families in the late Quattrocento.
43A4311: 'Trionfi d'Amore', 'Triumphus Cupidinis'; 'Carro d'amore' (Ripa)
46A122(Bentivoglio family): armorial bearing, heraldry: Bentivoglio family
61B2(PETRARCH): historical person: Petrarch
