This 12 th -century manuscripts contains a commentary on the Gospel
of Matthew. Although its origin is unknown, its provenance
indicates that it was produced in England. Contents:ff. 1r-193r:
Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, with a table of contents (ff.
1r-1v) and prologue (ff. 2v-5v: ‘introitus ad litteram libri’),
beginning ‘Cum post ascensionem domini spiritus sanctus corda
discipulorum illustrasset’. The manuscript contains a number of
additions:Marginal notes, in contemporary and later scripts, in
Latin and English (e.g. ff. 52r, 52v, 53r, 193r). A paper note
pasted on f. [i] verso contains authors cited are listed in a
modern cursive hand, almost certainly that of Humfrey Wanley.[f.
193v is blank]. Decoration:1 large initial in red with penwork
decoration inside the letter in red, green and blue (f. 2v). Medium
initials in green, red and blue, some with decorative motifs in
contrasting colours. Small initials in red, green or blue. Rubrics
in red or green. Marginal paragraph markers in red or green.
Capitals numbers in red. Catchwords in brown or red ink. Added
marginal drawings in ink of Christ raising Lazarus; a hybrid
creature with a halo; a praying figure; studies of a hand and feet,
a lion; two bearded figures holding a scroll; a man with a sword;
and two figures (ff. 87v, 88r, 102r, 143r, 144v, 148r, 193r).
