- Description
-
Contains a copy of the fifth book of William of Malmesbury's Gesta pontificum Anglorum which deals with the history of Malmesbury abbey and its founder St Aldhelm (640?-709).
The manuscript was copied in the sixteenth century for Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. In addition to Ff.1.25.2, his secretaries produced two other copies of Book 5 (Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, MS 43 and Cambridge, Trinity College MS R.5.34).
MS CUL Ff.1.25 is a composite manuscript made up of five different parts of different dates compiled in the sixteenth century. It was donated to the University Library by Archbishop Matthew Parker who gave 25 manuscripts from his collection in 1574. The parts were separated and bound individually in 1862.
