Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 279 is a composite manuscript, consisting of five texts. The two main texts are collection of sermons and letters by pope Leo I (d. 461), surrounded by two other letters and a collection of fragments: (ff. 1r-2r) fragments of several books of the Old Testament and the Athanasian Creed; (ff. 3r-102v) Tractatus septem et nonaginta by pope Leo I; (ff. 102v-175v) letters of pope Leo I; (ff. 175v-176r) Epistola Aurelii Carthaginensis episcopi ad omnes episcopos per Bizanzenam et Arguitanam prouinciam constitutos de damnatione Pelagii atque Celestii hereticorum, aaaa; (ff. 176r-176v) a letter by Augustine of Hippo (d. 430). The manuscript has been produced in the thirteenth century, probably in the scriptorium of either Ten Duinen or Ter Doest. The texts are copied in two columns, with decorated initials in red ink, and chapter indicators and rubrics in the same colour. The manuscript contains an ownership inscription of Ter Doest that has been extended to include a book curse. That the book belonged to the abbey was also made clear by the title: "Liber sancte Marie de Thosan, in quo continentur…". A second inscription was added in 1459. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
