Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 163 is a collection of three texts and two reference systems: (ff. 1r-186v) Etymologiarum sive Originum libri XX; (ff. 186v-187r) Epitoma disciplinarum (fragmentum Censorini quod vocatur); and (ff. 187r-192v) A collection of several texts, among which Venerable Bede's (d. 735) De temporum ratione liber and De natura rerum. Two of the texts, the Etymologiae and De natura rerum, are written by the Spanish bishop Isidore of Sevilla (d. 636). The Epitoma is (erroneously) attributed to the third-century Roman grammarian Censorinus. At the end (ff. 193r-194r) is a list of (capitulae) on the Etymologiae, written in a heavily abbreviated cursive hand from the late thirteenth century. Finally the last leaves (ff. 195r-210v) contain a Tabula in libro Etymologiarum, contemporaneous with the first three texts. The manuscript was copied in the final quarter of the twelfth century, possibly in (Southern) France. The text is copied in two columns (with the exception of the Capitulae, which are written in three columns). Initials are red and blue with decorative penwork in the other colour, often with long tails. Further on in the manuscript the initials are predominantly red. Rubrics, titles and Roman numerals in indices have been executed in red ink. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
