Description
  • 10th century copy of Gregory the Great's 'Regula Pastoralis' from St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury. With a full page illustration of Christ at the beginning, a major piece of Anglo-Saxon illumination, surrounded by a slightly later secondary text: The lives of St Peter & St Paul, attributed in the text to Pope Linus.
    Provenance: 1. St Augustine’s, Canterbury. 2. White, John, fl. 1553-1555 - donor to St John's.
    Contents: a. Fols. 6v-77v. Gregory I's Regula Pastoralis: Divisions: 1. Fol. 6v: An unidentified preface. 2. Fols. 8r-77v: Main text. A good many added glosses, generally ceasing after fol. 14, the end of 2.5. b. Fols. 1-4v, 7rv, 78-81v. Added text: The lives of St Peter & St Paul: Contents: 'Martyrus petri et pauli per LINUM Romae papae'. Notes in brown ink (anglicana, s. xiv in.) on fols. 1, 4vb and 78ra direct the reader through the non-continuous text. c. Glosses: Two Old English glosses: fols. 14r/14r.
    Hand: Fols. 6v-77v: Written in insular square minuscule, with both long and 8-shaped caroline s alternating with the insular form. Fols. 1-4v, 7rv, 78-81v: Written in caroline.
