In 1532 the University of Basel was provided with the former
Augustinian monastery as a second (“upper”) location in
addition to the (“lower”) one, the college building near the
Rheinsprung. This first volume of the upper college’s register
for the years 1543-1672 lists, among other items, those who endured
the Depositio rudimentorum, an archaic and rather cruel rite of
initiation as condition for official matriculation.
