Description
  • Physical Description:
68 leaves, 18 cm., bound volume
    Notes:
Records of the campaigns of Rochambeau's army in 1781 and 1782 kept by an identified officer of the Souissonais Regiment. The manuscripts includes: an account of the voyage from Brest to Rhode Island (ff. 2-9); two itineraries -- "Précis des Opérations et des Marches de l'Armée Combiné francaise et américaine pendenat le Campagne de 1781" (ff. 10-41) and "Campagne de l'année 1782" (ff. 57-68); and "Journal du Siége d'York en Virginie," by Querenet de La Combe (1731-1788), Lieutenant colonel, Royal Corps of Engineers; acting chief engineer for the French army at the Siege of Yorktown (f. 42-58) . The itineraries are accompanied by the maps in pen and watercolor. Also included is a note on Benedict Arnold. "Journal du Siége d'York en Virginie" is a formal Engineer Corps record of the siege rather than a personal journal. It incorporates French translations of the Articles of Capitulation (ff. 48-51 v.), George Washington address to the troops of Oct. 20, 1781 (ff. 51v. - 52) and Cornwallis' letter to Henry Clinton (Oct. 30, 1781). The f. 1 bears a note: "Monsieur David de Muraut, a la ville de Rouqemaure, 1786." The manuscript is bound in a fragment of a seventeenth century French military record.
