- Description
-
- Binding. English, 1544. Needlework by Princess Elizabeth (later
Elizabeth I).
Punning royal needlework. English, 1544. At the age of eleven, Princess Elizabeth translated and wrote out The Mirror or Glass of the Sinful Soul from a French meditational poem. She dedicated it to her stepmother, Queen Katherine Parr, as a New Year gift for 1 January 1545, hoping to secure her position in the royal family. The binding, surely also Elizabeth's own handiwork, is integral to the gift. On the blue textile background, a knot-work pattern of gold and silver braid encloses Katherine's initials, in a form which echoes her own signature. Stitched over padding in the corners are pansies (pensées), a favourite flower of the future queen.
