Summary:
Manuscript 55 holds four texts, groupable in two genres. The first
two, (ff. 1r-72v) the Gospel according to Matthew with glosses; and
(ff. 73r-101v) a commentary on the Book of Revelations, both
concern Biblical exegesis. The final two, (ff. 102r-117r) Vita
beati ac gloriosissimi confessoris Christi Guillelmi; and (ff.
117r-117v) prayers to be said at a mass for Saint William of
Gellone, form part of a cult for this saint, an eighth- and
ninth-century duke of Toulouse who was canonized in 1066. Until at
least the seventeenth century, a fifth text was present: the
Monologion of Anselm of Canterbury (d. 1109). The genesis of this
composite manuscript is complex and curious, as it does not follow
distinction between the two genres. The first text is believed to
have been written ca. 1120-1135 and was kept in the library of Ten
Duinen. The second and third text, dating respectively from ca.
1130-1140 and the second quarter of the twelfth century, had
already been bound together at the end of that same century. It was
not until the late fifteenth century at least that the three texts
were united in one codex. For the first text the south of France
has been suggested as region of origin, possibly Laon or Aquitaine.
The final two texts might hail from the same region, as Saint
William had ruled (part of) Aquitaine and was venerated there
especially. On the verso of the last leaf a short book catalogue
was written in the thirteenth century, concerning the contents of
the small bookchest (parvo armario). It is not sure whether the
catalogue describes the collection kept at Ter Doest at that time.

Convoluut. Datering en herkomst volgens Vlaamse kunst op perkament
1981, p. 73: Het eerste deel (ca. 1120 - 1135) is afkomstig uit de
librije van de Duinenabdij. Het tweede (ca. 1130 - 1140) en derde
(tweede kwart 12de eeuw) deel waren al in de 13de eeuw samen
ingebonden; ze zijn waarschijnlijk een latere aanwinst van de
Duinenabdij. Het eerste deel is ingebonden met het tweede en derde
deel ten vroegste tegen het einde van de 15de eeuw. Datering
volgens Janzen 2019, p. 183: de drie delen dateren van ca. 1126-ca.

Folio 117v bevat een 13de-eeuwse boekenlijst 'Libri de paruo
aumario' met 25 titels, geschreven in een gotisch schrift van de
tweede helft van de dertiende eeuw. Volgens N. Huyghebaert (1968,
p. 310-318) zou de lijst zou afkomstig kunnen zijn uit de abdij van
Ter Doest, maar volgens recent onderzoek kan de oorsprong niet met
zekerheid vastgesteld worden (Corpus Catalogorum Belgii 1997, vol.
