Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 116 holds a collection of works by Saint Augustine (354-430). A table of content and a glossary on the first folio are followed by: (ff. 2r-45v) De animae quantitate; (ff. 45v-78v) Soliloquia; and (ff. 78v-157v) De libero arbitrio. The next two pages (ff. 157v-158r) are used for four short poetry fragments: two on the plagues of Egypt and the creation of Earth, one called De annis incarnationis Domini, and the last called De sorte cuiusdam episcopi de XV christianis totidemque Iudeis. Finally, the last two folia (ff. 158v-159v) contain a list of works attributed to Augustine. There is no consensus yet about whether this is an early library catalogue or possible a 'wish list'. The manuscript was copied in the last quarter of the twelfth century, possibly in Germany. By the following century, it must have found its way into the library of Ten Duinen abbey, since a folio numbering in red ink, characteristic of the thirteenth-century Ten Duinen book collection, has been added. It is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
