Description
  • Composite manuscript. The two texts bound together in this manuscript contain no miniatures, but are masterpieces of English calligraphy, showing the abstract grace which characterized the work of English scribes in the 10th century. Though executed as separate jobs, the two parts are so similar that they must come from the same scriptorium at the same date: they have been attributed to St. Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, a major centre responsible for the majority of surviving Anglo-Saxon copies of Latin classical texts. The two manuscripts were bequeathed by Leofric, bishop of Exeter, 1046-72 A.D. to his cathedral library, and there they were bound into one volume. The leather of the binding was added in the 16th century over late 11th-century boards. The volume remained at Exeter until 1602, when Sir Thomas Bodley's brother Laurence, a canon of the cathedral, persuaded the Dean and Chapter to present nearly a hundred manuscripts to the Bodleian as a magnificent foundation gift.
