Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 78 was made between 1197 and 1218. The manuscript was commissioned by a canon, who then gifted it to Ter Doest Abbey. It contains the letters of Paul and the Catholic epistles of James, Peter, John and Judas. The text is provided with Glossa ordinaria. Supplementary to the letters is a tract by Gilbert de la Porrée (c. 1080-1154) about the letters. Historiated and decorated initials mark the beginning of each letter. On Folio 1r the first of Paul's letters is indicated by a large initial P. The historiated initial depicts stylized foliage and animals. The initial was made with gold leaf and the colours blue, green, red and white. Within the initial P is a hunchbacked man, leaning on a crutch. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Sarah Vanroye]
