Description
  • Summary:
This manuscript holds an anthology of Augustine's writings on the Letter of saint Paul to the Romans. The creator of this collection is Florus of Lyon, a deacon in Lyon at the end of the eight century and the beginning of the ninth century. Copied approximately in the third quarter of the twelfth century, the codex is assumed to have been written at the Ten Duinen abbey, matching the codicological characteristics found in Ten Duinen-produced books, as well as the sober textual layout and monochrome initials. The manuscript is based on copies originally belonging to the library of Clairmarais, a Cistercian abbey with close ties to Ten Duinen. The text has been written in two columns and in a late Carolingian script. The very first initial, 'P(aulus)' is a huge, 23-line high decorated letter in red ink. The other initials are primarily red, occasionally blue, and marginal references to other Augustinian texts are also in red ink. A contemporary ownership inscription of Ten Duinen is found on the last leaf, while the first and last leaf each carries the abbey's cross-shaped stamp. The manuscript is bound in leather over wooden boards, blindstamped with decorated rectangular frames. The pastedowns on either side are leaves from the Institutiones Iustiniani, one of the books from the Corpus Iuris Civilis, and show two columns main text, decorated with initials and paragraphs marks in red and blue ink, surrounded by two columns of glosses.
