Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 88 is a collection of excerpts from the works of pope Gregory I (r. 590-604), one of the major influences on Cistercian monasticism. Written around the third quarter of the twelfth century within the Ten Duinen scriptorium, this manuscript contains commentaries on books of the Bible: i.e. (ff. 1r-35v) Genesis; (ff. 35v-58v) Exodus; (ff. 58v-63v) Leviticus; (ff. 63v-80r) Numeri; (ff. 80r-98r) Isaias; (ff. 98r-108v) Jeremiah; (ff. 108v-118r) Ezekiel; (ff. 118r-122r) Daniel; (ff. 122r-124v) Hosea; (ff. 124v-125v) Joel; (ff. 125v-126v) Amos; (f. 126v) Micah; (f. 126v-127r) Nahum; (ff. 127r-128r) Habakkuk; (f. 128r-v) Zephaniah; (ff. 128v-129r) Haggai; (ff. 129r-132r) Zechariah; (ff. 132r-136r) the Psalms; and (ff. 136r-141v) the Book of Revelation. The text is written in two columns with rubrics. Initials are present in red, blue and green, with two larger, more decorated, initials at the beginning of Genesis (f. 1r and 2r). The larger commentaries are preceded by a register. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
