- For the Medici. Italian, c. 1565. Red goatskin over wooden boards. Decorated all over in elaborate interlaced gilt tooling, with red and black mosaic. At the centre of the front cover is a seascape painted in grisaille; on the back are the arms of the Medici impaling those of Austria. The doublures similarly decorated with interlace. Although this volume has suffered from the ravages of book-worms, the complexity of both design and execution still astonish. The volume is a portolan or atlas of sea-charts by the Genoese master Francesco Ghisolfi, c. 1565, although this luxurious production was never intended for use on board ship.
