- Description
-
- This manuscript originates from the second half of the 9th century (Bischoff, Katalog (2004), p. 99; Zangemeister, ‘Bericht’ (1876), p. 44). It may have been produced in the Southern Netherlands (Bischoff, Katalog (2004), p. 99; Ganz, ‘Review’) or France (Jacob, Die handschriftliche Überlieferung (1954), p. 15). It contains the Historia Ecclesiastica Tripartita (Tripartite Ecclesiastical History). This is a collection of three Church histories by the historians Socrates Scholasticus (b. c. 380; d. c. 440), Sozomen (b. c. 400, d. c. 450), and Theodoret (b. 393, d. 458), that were compiled by Cassiodorus (b. c. 485, d. c. 580), and, under his direction, translated from Greek into Latin by Epiphanius Scholasticus (fl. early 6th century). Contents: f. 1r: A fragment of a theological text citing from the homilies of Gregory the Great (b. c. 540, d. 604). ff. 1v-215v: Cassiodorus-Epiphanius, Historia Ecclesiastica Tripartita , Books I-XII, imperfect due to loss of folios throughout the manuscript and at the end. The manuscript contains a later addition: f. 216r: A description of the Historia Ecclesiastica Tripartita , added in a ?13th- or 14th-century script. [f. 216v is blank].Decoration:Large and small plain initials in red. Display capitals in red (some oxidized). Roman numerals in red and green. An added marginal drawing in drypoint of a circle within a circle (f. 34r); the outline of a parrot in brown ink on f. 189v.
