Description
  • An 11th century copy of St John Chrysostom's Homilies on Genesis, probably produced in Cyprus in the first half of the century. The margins of this manuscript have been used as a model book by at least three artists from the 12th to the 16th centuries: over 100 figures copied from Cypriot icons are found in the margins in a variety of styles and inks. This manuscript was also used by Sir Henry Savile for his 1612 edition of Chrysostom.
Provenance: Though we do not know where this manuscript was produced, by the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century it must have been in Cyprus or a place with close connections to Cyprus. Date of acquisition by Magdalen College is unknown, however this manuscript appears in Thomas Jane's Ecloga (1600) and Magdalen MS 776, a catalogue of manuscripts from 1630.
Contents: In Genesim homiliae (ff. 1r-322v).
Hand: Two scribes: Scribe A wrote folios 1-274v and 279-290v; Scribe B wrote folios 281-320v. Both in formal minuscule hand. Folios 275-81 and 321 supplied in 14th century hand, replacing original leaves which had been lost or severely damaged.
