    183, [25] leaves, 16 cm. (8vo) Leaf height: 142 mm, width: 96 mm.
    Binding:

    Late eighteenth-century full goatskin; triple gilt fillet and fleurons at corners to form a border; board edges and turn-ins gilt rolled; watered silk end-papers; parchment end-papers either side of text; gilt tools in spine compartments; gilt-lettered onto leather spine label in second compartment: Il / Petrarch; gilt monogram: [MR?] stamped at base of spine; all edges gilt; nineteenth-century gilt monogram of The John Rylands Library (JR in roundel) stamped on front cover.


    Decoration:

    Late eighteenth-century leaf bound before title-page: recto blank; on verso are two small engraved portraits of Petrarch and Laura: [Dortu del.?] N Le Mire sculp. (Noël, le Mire, 1724-1801) l'an 2e.

    Part of the Spencer library acquired by Enriqueta Rylands in 1892 from John Poyntz Spencer (1835-1910), 5th Earl Spencer for The John Rylands Library

    Counterfeit of the third Aldine edition of July 1521, edited by Pietro Bembo; with Aldus's letter to readers. No imprint or printer's device. Possibly printed in Venice by Gregorio de Gregori ca. 1522

    MS note in an unknown hand on second front free end-paper recto: This is a Venetian counterfeit / and very rare. / Renouard Tom.II p.321 collated & perfect. / On comparing this with the / Dante of Alex Paganini / (Ren. Tom.II p.321) I have / no doubt of its having / issued from the same press. [i.e. Alessadro dei Paganini, active 1513-1538].


    Condition:
    Imperfect: wanting blank leaves sig. z8 and B8, and all of gathering C (with index).
