Description
  • (whole page). Decorated initial C(um …) with vine-stem decoration, the background in blue and buff (this initial is probably finished, the vine-stem deliberately left uncoloured); minor initial B(ritannia …) in blue with simple red flourishing.
The first page of MS. Bodl. 514, fols.1-36, a late 12th-century English manuscript of Geoffrey of Monmouth Gesta regum Britanniae with fine stemwork initials which are partly unfinished. The Geoffrey of Monmouth text was bound up by the middle of the 13th century with six (now five) other booklets in a volume which contains 13th-century ex libris inscriptions of the Cistercian abbey of Jervaulx, Yorkshire.
