Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 251 contains the first nine of eighteen books of the Speculum Doctrinale - Mirror of doctrine - by Vincent of Beauvais (c. 1190-1264). Mirror of doctrine is the second part of Speculum Maius - the Great Mirror -, a compendium of medieval knowledge. Other parts of the Great Mirror are the Speculum Naturale and the Speculum Historiale. Mirror of doctrine deals with the subjects of grammar, logic, rhetoric, poetry, virtue, medicine, astronomy, agriculture, engineering, politics and law. The manuscript dates back to the end of the thirteenth century. It was part of the Ter Doest library. Manuscript 251 is richly illuminated. It has historiated initials and marginalia at the beginning of each book (Folio 1r, 24r, 54v, 112v, 149v, 191r, 22v, 254v, 299v). The marginalia portray a range of subjects. The first are caricatures such as hybrid creatures with mitres; a woman playing the fiddle with a rake. Another subject of the marginalia are realistic scenarios such as animal slaughter, ball games, a post mill. An example on Folio 299v also shows literary references to animal stories: a woman chasing a white cat with genitalia between its jaws; and a fox in pilgrim dress reading a letter. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Sarah Vanroye]
