Description
  • Bound to be shared. French (Paris), c.1547. Brown calfskin, with 'Thomae Wotton et amicorum' (Thomas Wotton and his friends) tooled in gilt. Wotton was the first Englishman to follow the practice begun by Jean Grolier, of sharing his library with his close associates. The phrase 'et amicorum' was therefore an expression of the social nature of his book collection.
