Summary:
Lietbertus of Saint-Ruf (d. probably around 1110) was a Southern
French abbot, who wrote a commentary on the Psalter, the Flores
Psalmorum. Little is known about the author, who apparently was a
canon in Lille. The text begins with a preface by a certain 'G.,
Magalonensis episcopus', writing to the provost of Lille to concede
any of Lietbertus' requests in the process of writing this book. A
later hand added in the initial 'G' the rest of the name:
'alterus', which was taken over by later annotators, including De
Visch's seventeenth-century title. He also explained some other
monoliteral names, such as 'Romane' for 'R.' and 'Letberti' for
'L.' The name Galterus refers to Walter of Lille, who held the
position of bishop of Maguelone from 1104 to 1129. The text is
written in a sober style in two columns. Only the initials and the
(rare) incipits and explicits have been added in red, without any
additional decoration. The parchment is of mediocre quality, with
several leaves showing holes around which the text has been
positioned. On the verso of the final leaf an contemporary
ownership inscription of Ten Duinen is found, while the abbey's
cross-shaped stamp is present twice in the manuscript. The cover
consists of brown leather over wooden boards, showing a
blindstamped diamond pattern within a rectangular frame. The
position of two clasps, now lost, is visible. [Summary by Dr. Mark
