    Abstract:

Miscellaneous works of St Cyprian, produced in the Lake Constance area in the late 8th century.

    Format:
    Codex
    Material:
    Parchment.
    Provenance:

The collection of Canon Maimbourg, curé of Colmar, to which this manuscript belonged (James, i. pp.xxvi, 41), passed to his heir Henri Chauffour and was sold by auction on 6th March 1858 (not in 1838); this manuscript was no. 138 and brought 505fr. See an account of the sale in A. Claudin, 'Archives du bibliophile' i (1858), 25-26 and cf. ibid. ii (1859), 218 (de Ricci, RLL, Sept. 1923).

On Bernard Quaritch (b. 1819, d. 1899), bookseller and publisher's advice James Ludovic Lindsay (b. 1847, d. 1913), 26th Earl of Crawford was prepared to offer £21 when the manuscript appeared in the Guglielmo Libri (b. 1803, f. 1869), mathematican and book thief sale on 29 March 1859 but it went to Bateman for £170. It was purchased over 30 years later for the Bibliotheca Lindesiana by James Ludovic Lindsay (b. 1847, d. 1913), 26th Earl of Crawford at the Bateman Sale for £270 - he had been prepared to offer £350 (CLL, 1859, nos. 83-4, 86, 88; ibid. May-Aug. 1893, nos. 417, 461; CLI, 1892-94, no. 153).
