    Binding:

    Eighteenth-century[?] full diced calfskin over boards; blind-tooled fillets and interlace design; gilt coat of arms of Spencer family on upper and lower boards; gilt direct-lettering on spine: Petrarcha / Opere / Vellutello / Vinegia / 1525.

    Part of the Spencer library acquired by Enriqueta Rylands in 1892 from John Poyntz Spencer (1835-1910), 5th Earl Spencer for The John Rylands Library

    The first edition of Vellutello's commentary.

    Petrarch’s poems and commentary in italic type; printed numbering; some of Petrarch’s poems set on left in small block, with commentary distributed on three sides; some other of Petrarch’s poems set on left in a sequence of blocks, with commentary distributed in single column on right.

    Contains woodcut map of the district around Avignon at sig. AA4v-AA5r.

    The 'triomphi', without foliation, and with separate titlepage and register, form the second part.

    The preliminary matter includes 'Trattato de l'ordine de son. et canz. del Pet. mutato', 'Vita et costumi del poeta', 'Origine di Madonna Laura, con la discrittione di Valclusa'.

    At the end of the 'sonetti & canzoni' are four sonnets addressed to Petrarch by Stramazzo of Perugia & others.
